The main cause of stains on rings is oil from skin sebum and cosmetics.

If you look at your ring and feel that the stone's shine is dull or the color is whitish or blackish, we recommend having it cleaned.

Here, we will tell you how to easily clean your ring yourself. First, gather the tools necessary for cleaning. You can use tools you have at home, but make sure to use soft materials such as cloth and toothbrushes so as not to scratch the ring. Warm water is used to lift the dirt, so we recommend using water that is a little hot enough to touch.

  • Lukewarm water
  • Neutral detergent (such as dishwashing detergent)
  • A soft cloth (such as a microfiber cloth)
  • Soft toothbrush
  • bowl

2. Cleaning Procedure (Platinum/Gold)

Once you have everything you need, we'll walk you through the cleaning process.

1. Make a cleaning solution : Fill a bowl with warm water (hot enough to touch) and add 3-4 drops of mild detergent. Soak your ring in this solution.

② Soak : Soak the ring in the cleaning solution for 5 to 10 minutes to loosen any dirt or oils.

③ Brushing : Use a soft toothbrush to gently brush the prongs that hold the diamonds and other stones, as well as the surface and fine parts of the ring. Be especially gentle on parts with complex designs.

④ Rinse : Rinse the ring thoroughly with lukewarm water or tap water to ensure that no detergent remains. If the ring has a fine design, make sure that no small parts or stones have come off before rinsing. It is recommended to use a colander to rinse the cleaning solution.

⑤ Drying : After washing, gently wipe the ring with a soft cloth and allow it to dry completely. You can also air dry it, but make sure to do so in a place that is not humid.

3. Cleaning precautions

You may now understand that cleaning it yourself is relatively easy, but there are a few things you need to be careful of when cleaning it. Here we will explain those points in detail.

Avoid Chemicals : If the above cleaning methods did not remove the stain, do not use harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia as they may damage metals and jewelry.

Use an ultrasonic cleaner : If your jewelry has delicate designs or gemstones, be careful with ultrasonic cleaners. It's less hassle than hand washing and will get the dirt off better, but it may cause the gemstones to come loose.

Be careful with gemstones that have been "impregnated" : Emeralds are famous for being "impregnated," a process known for beautifying natural stones. However, because emeralds have inclusions and cracks within the stone, most are kept in a beautiful state by impregnating them with oil or a special resin.

Therefore, if this impregnated gemstone is ultrasonically cleaned, there is a risk that the impregnated components will be removed, so emeralds are generally not ultrasonically cleaned . There are various other gemstones that are "heat treated" to enhance their color, but it is particularly important to be careful when cleaning the impregnated gemstones.

Check the cleaning method : Depending on the type of the base metal, such as silver, plating, or natural stones, some items may not be exposed to water or hot water, and some may require special cleaners. For cleaning of items other than gold and platinum, please check with the store where you purchased the item.

4. Cleaning frequency and general price range

How often should I have my clothes cleaned? This is a question I am often asked, so I would like to talk about how often you should have your clothes cleaned and the general price range if you have it cleaned at a professional cleaning shop.

The recommended frequency for cleaning varies by store, from once a week to once every three months, but this also depends on the base metal and design of the ring, so there is no set rule. However, gold and platinum rings can be kept beautiful by cleaning them about once every three months .

- Silver products : If the product is not plated, it will tarnish within a few days, and even if it is plated, the surface will tarnish quickly, so if the color has dulled, it is time to clean it.

・Gold (k10, k18), Platinum (PT950, PT900) : Gold and platinum are the color of the base metal without plating on the surface, so there is little discoloration, and the color of the base metal does not become dull. As a guideline, if oily dirt gets into the decorative parts (around the stones, carved patterns, etc.), the shine will be lost, so if you notice this, it is time to clean it.

*Only k10YG has more than half of the alloy in the base metal made from silver or copper, so the silver part is more likely to tarnish during storage than k18, causing black spots to appear on the surface or the ring to become cloudy.

Another option is to have your ring cleaned at a specialized store. Many stores offer free cleaning to customers who purchase a ring, but this service is only available for rings that are not prone to stones falling off or have delicate designs that require careful handling .

For designs that require more careful handling, we may ask our own specialized factory to clean them to prevent damage, so there will be a fee. This also depends on the material of the ring, such as the base metal, but the general price seems to be around 1,500 to 3,000 yen , but maintenance by a professional can repair deeper stains and damage than cleaning it yourself.

5. Change your cleaning method depending on the dirt

There are various ways to clean your ring, from easy ways to do it yourself to ways to ask a specialist store. There are many ways to do it, so some people may be wondering what to do. So, we will tell you which cleaning method is recommended depending on the dirt, so please refer to it.

1. Light stains → Gently wipe off oily stains such as sebum with a dry cloth. Easy to clean by yourself.

Light stains are something you can take care of yourself, so try some simple methods to fix them first.

*We also recommend using jewelry polishing cloths sold at jewelry stores. Polishing cloths contain abrasives that are suited to the material, and come in different types for silver, gold, platinum, and pearls, so choose the one that best suits your jewelry.

② Moderate dirt : Dirt that has gotten into gaps cannot be removed by hand or with simple cleaning, so have the store where you purchased the item ultrasonically clean it.

If you have taken care of it yourself but are still concerned about dirt, please contact the store where you purchased it. Just ultrasonic cleaning can make it much cleaner.

3) Severe stains or scratches: If the item has scratches as well as stains, we recommend having it refurbished at the store where you purchased it.

Stains and small scratches that do not come off even with ultrasonic cleaning are discolorations or unevenness on the surface of the base metal. If cleaning has not worked, you can restore the shine of the ring by polishing the surface with a special tool. Please ask the store where you purchased it or a specialist store.

6. How to store your ring

Rings in a jewelry box

So far, I have been talking about how to clean your ring, but lastly, I would like to talk about how to store your ring. How you store your ring after cleaning is very important.

Avoid direct sunlight : Keeping your item out of direct sunlight will help prevent fading.

Be careful of humidity : Avoid humid places and store in a well-ventilated environment as much as possible.

Use a jewelry box or jewelry pouch : Try to store your jewelry separately as much as possible to prevent scratches. We recommend using a jewelry box or a dedicated jewelry pouch when carrying your jewelry when going out or traveling.

What do you think? By simply cleaning your ring regularly and storing it properly, you can maintain the original shine and beauty of your ring. Because it is such an important item, I think that by taking just a little extra care, you can make it into a piece of jewelry that you will cherish even more.

If you haven't had your jewelry cleaned yet, give it a try. Enjoy your fashion with the sparkle of your jewelry, which will stand up to the glittering summer sunshine.
