Recently, lab-grown diamonds have become a hot topic.
What is the difference between natural diamonds? Are they fake diamonds? Although we have heard of them, there are still many people who don't really understand what they are.
So, today I would like to tell you about the characteristics and appeal of lab-grown diamonds .

1. What are lab-grown diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds are materials with the exact same chemical, physical and optical properties as mined natural diamonds. Not only are they made from the same carbon as natural diamonds, but they also have the exact same crystal structure and hardness.
The only difference between lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds is that lab-grown diamonds are grown in machines in a laboratory, replicating the process and environment in which natural diamonds are formed.
Furthermore, they are born with a "clear shine with almost no impurities," which is found in only a few percent of natural diamonds .
Lab-grown diamonds, which are created without any conflict or damage to the earth, have become popular mainly in the United States and are now the next generation of diamonds, attracting attention from jewelry and high fashion brands around the world.

2. The exact same composition as mined natural diamonds
While natural diamonds form deep underground, lab-grown diamonds are created in laboratories on land.
The only difference between mined and natural diamonds is that they are produced in different environments, but their chemical, physical and optical properties are exactly the same, with the same components and characteristics. Not only are they made from the same carbon, but they also have the same crystal structure and hardness.
Therefore, it is completely different from imitations and similar stones such as cubic zirconia and moissanite.
3. The secret to outstanding, transparent radiance
Lab-grown diamonds are said to have outstanding transparency and an eye-catching, beautiful sparkle, and the secret lies in the type of diamond they are.
Approximately 98% of natural diamonds are classified as "type I," which means they contain nitrogen within the carbon.
The remaining 2% is classified as "type IIa," which contains almost no impurities and accounts for only about 2% of "type II," which does not contain nitrogen in its carbon. Larger stones in particular command a premium and are traded at high prices.
In contrast, all lab-grown diamonds are classified as Type IIa [Type 2A] and are crystallized without any unnecessary impurities, making them harder and more brilliant than Type Ia (Type 1A) diamonds.
4. How Lab-Grown Diamonds are Produced
While natural diamonds take years to form deep within the earth, lab-grown diamonds are created in a factory or laboratory in a matter of days or weeks.
There are two main methods for manufacturing lab-grown diamonds.
①HPHT method that reproduces the environment in which natural diamonds are formed
The HPHT method, which has been researched for the longest time and is currently the most widely used, reproduces the environment in which natural diamonds are formed in "factories and laboratories. Natural diamonds are formed deep inside the earth, when carbon crystallizes over a long period of time in a high-temperature, high-pressure environment. However, an environment similar to this is artificially created, and cylindrical carbon is subjected to pressures of about 55,000 atmospheres and temperatures of over 1,400°C to artificially form diamonds.
②Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method for growing diamond in layers
The CVD method, which is suitable for large, clear diamonds, produces diamonds by piling gaseous carbon molecules on top of sliced diamond seed crystals like a mille-feuille. By applying microwave energy to methane gas containing carbon, diamonds are grown little by little, and the type and amount of chemical impurities can be precisely controlled, making it possible to produce diamonds with high purity.
Lab-grown diamonds, produced using these two typical methods, have made it possible to create diamonds with the same components and composition as natural diamonds using human wisdom and technology.
Lab-grown diamonds created in this way have a beautiful shine, just like diamonds themselves.
5. Ethical jewelry that is kind to the environment and people
Natural diamonds are extracted by digging up mines, which places a burden on the environment through soil and air pollution. In addition, forced labor in mining sites and "conflict diamonds" that are produced in conflict zones and illegally sold have been regarded as problems internationally.
In contrast, the process of creating lab-grown diamonds is kind to the earth, with almost no burden on the environment, such as soil or air pollution. In addition, because they are grown in laboratories that are free from conflict and labor issues, they are environmentally friendly and ethical jewelry that can be supplied stably .
In recent years, awareness of ethical fashion has been growing in Japan, and lab-grown diamonds are attracting attention as a new option for sustainable and beautiful jewelry.

6. Affordable price
It is said that about 1,000 tons of sand must be dug up to extract one carat of natural diamond, so diamond mining requires a lot of time and labor.
On the other hand, as mentioned above, lab-grown diamonds are much more efficient than mining natural diamonds because high-quality diamonds can be produced in a lab in a matter of weeks to months.
For this reason, they are sold at a price that is about 30% to 40% lower than that of natural diamonds , making them easy to purchase and popular among the younger generation.

7. More options for customization
Natural diamonds include colored diamonds such as red and blue, but most are pale in color, and those with deep, vivid colors are extremely rare and valuable.
In comparison, lab-grown diamonds come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and colors, so a great advantage is that you can enjoy colors and sizes that are not normally available with natural diamonds .
In addition, because they are affordable and there is a wide range of colors and shapes to choose from to suit your taste, they are also popular with people looking for more unique designs.

・Reducing environmental impact and avoiding human rights issues
・Affordable price
Wide range of options for customization
・Increasing interest in sustainability worldwide
In addition to the above, the idea of SDGs has also become widespread in the fashion industry due to the United Nations Alliance for Sustainable Fashion, which was launched in 2019. As a result, the demand from the younger generation, who are proactive about sustainability, is also driving the popularity of lab-grown diamonds.
