Did you know that there are semi-custom and full-custom rings? Some people order engagement rings, wedding rings, and even rings for everyday use if they are particular about their style.
Although it is called custom-made, it is also called semi-custom-made. There is a full custom order option , and there are several differences in design freedom, production time, price, etc. In this article, I would like to explain these differences in an easy-to-understand way.

1.What is semi-custom order?
If you think, "I want a simple design so that the diamond stands out," "I want to be particular about the design because it's something I'll wear for the rest of my life," or "I like this design, but I'd like a slightly larger diamond," then we recommend you consider semi-custom ordering.
When it comes to custom-made rings, semi-order is a more popular method than full order. Below we will introduce the general semi-order method, but since the range of customization varies depending on the store, we recommend that you check in advance.
Features
- Freedom of design : You can customize parts of an existing design. For example, you can choose the shape and decoration of the ring from pre-made designs, and then change the material, gemstone, finish, etc.
- Choice of materials and gemstones : This varies depending on the store, but there are customizations available to match the base design, and you can choose from these, so although it won't be completely original, you can create a design of your choice.
- Production process : Choose a base design and decide on the customization details.
- Delivery time : Shorter than a full order, the simplest semi-order (where you select only the material, stone, and finishing method and have the same specifications as the sample product) will take as little as 3 weeks to 1 month. For what is generally called a semi-order (depending on the amount of customization, such as material, stone, arm variations, and finishing method), the delivery time is about 1.5 to 2 months.
- Price : It is more affordable than a full custom order. Since it is based on a ready-made design, costs are kept down.
merit
- It's a relatively affordable way to add originality.
- The production period is short.
- Some customization allows you to express your individuality.
Demerit
- The freedom of design is limited.
- It's not completely original.
With semi-custom orders, you can choose the color of the material, the shape of your arm, the shape of the stone, etc. to match the design you have in mind. This ordering method makes it easy to imagine the final product , so you can choose according to your budget. The appeal is that you can enjoy combining different items to create a ring that is just for you.
2. What is full order?
For those who say, "I can't find a design I like" or "I want a piece of jewelry that is one of a kind," we recommend a "full order."
Features
- Freedom of design : You can create a completely original design. You can discuss your ideas and wishes with designers and craftsmen and create the design from scratch.
- Choice of material and gemstone : You can freely choose the metal (platinum, gold, silver, etc.) and gemstone (diamond, lab-grown diamond, sapphire, emerald, etc.) to be used.
- Production process : We hold multiple meetings with designers and craftsmen, and proceed by checking sketches and 3D models.
- Delivery time : It usually takes 2-3 months from design to completion . The more complex the design, the longer it will take.
- Price : Prices are higher than ready-made or semi-custom items. Prices vary depending on the complexity of the design and the materials you choose.
merit
- A completely original design, one of a kind in the world
- Specifications with attention to detail are possible
Demerit
- Costs tend to be high
- It takes a long time to complete
When ordering a fully custom-made piece, it is very important to clearly communicate the jewelry you normally wear and your personal preferences.
Also, the most important thing to keep in mind is that it takes a long time to complete. If you include the time it takes to discuss the design and create samples and rings, it will take at least 2 to 3 months to deliver, so we recommend that you order with plenty of time to spare.
It takes a long time to deliver, but many people say that the time they spend on their order makes them feel even more impressed when they receive the finished product.
3. What is a ready-made product?
So, what is the difference between ready-made and custom-made?
A ready-made product is a finished product that is in stock in a store or on a website and can be purchased immediately, known as "ready-made jewelry."
Since the design and material combinations are fixed, you can choose while checking the actual product, and you can easily obtain high-quality designs, making it ideal for when you want to prepare quickly for a special occasion or if you are on a budget.
Another major advantage is that, unlike custom-made products, there is no time required from purchase to delivery, so many people who want to get it right away tend to purchase ready-made products.
4. What is texture?
For both full and semi-custom orders, you can choose not only the base metal material (such as K18, K24, or platinum) but also the texture.
The texture of a ring refers to the finish and pattern on the surface of the ring. The appearance and feel of the ring can change dramatically depending on the texture, so even the same design can give a completely different impression just by changing the texture.

Mirror finish (polished finish) is a classic and popular finishing method. Mirror-finished rings continue to be loved by many people because of their beautiful luster and luxurious feel.

Hairline finish is a matte finish that carves thin linear grooves like hairs in a certain direction. It is a finishing method that creates fine lines in a certain direction on the surface of the ring, and is characterized by its unique texture and beauty. This finish is simple yet gives a unique impression, making it popular in a variety of situations.

A matte finish is a finishing method with a reduced gloss, characterized by a calm texture and an elegant atmosphere. This finish gives a simple yet sophisticated impression, and is popular with many people.

Millgrain rings are a beautiful finish with a classic, antique appeal. The small round grained details add a touch of luxury and decorativeness to the ring, making them a favorite among many as special occasion rings or antique jewelry.
5. What is milling?

As we briefly mentioned in the texture section, milgrain is one of the most popular designs for wedding rings.
Millgrain means "eternity" or "lasting happiness." It represents "a thousand grains" and is a very elegant design with many grains of decoration on the base metal. It requires advanced techniques to string together the fine grains, and there are three main methods for processing it.
・"How to type them in by hand one by one"
・"How to stamp with a tool"
・"Method of casting using a mold"
The most difficult method is to hammer the beads into the ring by hand, one by one. The tip of a tool called a "mill chisel" is placed against the metal, and the beads are hammered in by tapping it with a hammer, but applying the beads evenly requires skilled technique.
In addition to its elegant appearance, it has the advantage of scattering light, making small scratches less noticeable. However, it also has the disadvantages that dirt tends to accumulate in the gaps, protrusions can disappear due to wear, and it is difficult to resize.
Millgrain rings are made with the grain being calculated to be evenly balanced overall, so they can be difficult to reduce, extend, weld, or polish when resizing. However, they can be kept beautiful forever by performing regular maintenance such as cleaning, and by taking measures such as designing the ring so that the arm part on the palm side of the ring that will be resized does not have milgrain.
